Practice:
Mr. Hickman’s practice is concentrated in appellate
work and insurance coverage matters.
Appellate
During the past 41 years, Mr. Hickman has handled more
than 450 appeals in state and federal courts. He heads
the firm’s Appellate Team and is a frequent guest lecturer
on appellate practice and procedure. Mr. Hickman’s reputation
as an appellate attorney is outstanding. He has been
elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Appellate
Lawyers.
Since 1975, Mr. Hickman has edited the Washington Insurance
Law Letter, a publication which reviews recent developments
in insurance and tort law. The Washington Supreme Court
and the Court of Appeals have cited the Law Letter.
It has been admitted as a learned treatise in superior
court litigation. In 1988, Mr. Hickman received an Award
of Excellence from the State Farm Insurance Companies
in recognition of “Outstanding Service” for editing
the Law Letter.
Mr. Hickman is frequently asked to present seminars
on such topics as appellate practice, bad faith, bioethics,
violence in the workplace, and tort reform.
Mr. Hickman was a co-author and contributing editor
of the Washington Appellate Practice Deskbook (First
and Second Editions). Together with former Reed McClure
attorney Mary DeYoung, he authored Allocation of Environmental
Clean-Up Liability Between Successive Insurers, 17 Northern
Kentucky L. Rev. 291 (1990). He was the Washington State
editor of Products Liability: A State-By-State Compendium
(DRI; 2004).
He is a member of the Commercial Panel of the American
Arbitration Association.
Mr. Hickman was named as a “Washington Super Lawyer”
in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Background:
Mr. Hickman was born in Longview, Washington. His family
consists of his wife Darlene, daughters, Kristin and
Kari-Mae, granddaughter Katherine Elizabeth and grandsons
William Reilly, Jack Riley, Robert Jon, and Matthew
Fitzgerald.
Mr. Hickman is admitted to practice in the United States
Supreme Court, the United States District Court, Eastern
and Western Districts of Washington, the United States
Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the courts
of the State of Washington.
Mr. Hickman is a member of the following professional

Community Service Activites:
Mr. Hickman is a certified master level track official.
He served as a timer at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics,
as a track umpire at the 1987 Pan-American Games, as
a starter for the 1990 Goodwill Games, as a Judge of
the 1992 and 2008 U.S.A. Olympic trials and Head Starter
for the Seattle 1998 and Eugene 2004 National Junior
Olympics.
Mr. Hickman is a member of Pacific Northwest Track and
Field and USA Track and Field. In 1997, he received
the contributor award from the Youth Committee of PNWTF
for “20 years of service to the youth of western Washington.”
In 1996, he was named “Official of the Year.” In 1989,
he received the “President’s Award” for outstanding
leadership and support of Track and Field programs and
goals. He is also a member of USA Track and Field’s
Rules of Competition Committee, and the Law and Legislation
Committee. He was a member of the Anti-Doping Commission
of the International Association of Athletics Federations
from 1999 to 2003.
